In contemporary art many artists have perfected photo-realism, creating both 2D and 3D work that flawlessly resembles life. However, extreme abstraction has also become popular and has risen in prevalence. I am for neither, and instead prefer to create surreal and imagined objects, particularly in my 2 dimensional work. In my work I allow the material to take a life of its own, and create the picture with me, often creating a glowing and dreamlike quality in my pieces. When creating drawings the graphite and charcoal will smudge and blend and move, becoming its own entity and helping shape a unique image. Even with three dimensional media, the material asks that I go with its natural properties even when I have a completed version of the piece already in my head. I believe that allowing the material to show, and not create something photographic in quality but obviously drawn or molded by human hands creates real art.
In my more recent works, I have taken to using paint, and emulating a graffiti like style in my sketchbook. The freedom of painting has drawn me, and I am curious to broaden my horizons with a different fluid medium unlike most of what I have used prior. The vibrant colors in this medium are the most unfamiliar to me and I am excited to play with these elements. Pictures are soon to come.
